Sock Island Bridge

Leicester

August 4, 2013

The concept draws on the historical use of the site for rope and latter sock production. Steel hoops provide a frame between which a mesh of rods forms a horizontal hyperbolic paraboloid. The deck skewers the form holding the hoops apart in tension. The imagery is of a stretched sock over a weaving frame.

The modern construction and materials form a perfect link from the past uses of the Island to the modern International Space Centre. The bridge also forms a worm hole structural form enhancing the journey from one land mass to another.
